(c) Equal Pay: under the Equal Pay Scheme the

SAT's have lost their marriage gratuity and full pay for maternity leave, but their salary scale is 25 per cent lower than men anyway, so the 1971 scheme has resulted in a loss rather than a gain for them.

When we met the representatives of the SAT's in Hong Kong, we were exceedingly impressed with them. They seemed to us to be bright, well-educated young people who would normally expect to have some prospect for advancement in their chosen careers. It appears that at one time a post as an SAT held some prospects for advancement which have now disappeared. It is not surprising, therefore, that they should seek to restore what they feel restructuring is removing from them.

It is for these reasons that we became interested in their case and that is why our General Secretary suggested some form of arbitration in the letter he sent to you.

Yours respectfully,
