Meanwhile, also on 19th January, 1977, a Chinese male Lau Ka-luk (0491/0857/4389) was arrested by Narcotics Bureau officers. Lau and CHENG had been partners in the infamous Au Tau Village/Ngau Tau Mei heroin retailing syndicate which is believed to have distributed over 7 tons of heroin to the local retail market between 1965 and 1972. Lau and CHENG have been jointly charged with Conspiracy to Traffic in Dangerous Drugs and their trial is now pending in Supreme Court,

On 4th January, 1977, acting on information Narcotics Bureau Officers stopped a Chinese male YEUNG Hok-kwong (2799/1331/0342) outside No. 5 Belcher Street, Western district. A search of the plastic bag he was carrying revealed a total of 9 morphine blocks weighing almost 10 kilogrammes. 69. YEUNG, a merchant seaman of Chiu Chow origin, was charged with 'Possession of Dangerous Drugs for the Purpose of Unlawful Trafficking'. He was subsequently convicted in the High Court and sentenced to a term of 9 years imprisonment.
(W/CR/14/77) 70. On 8th June, 1977, a schoolboy travelling on a public omnibus in Sham Shui Po, Kowloon, noticed a suspicious looking parcel in a nearby seat. He reported this to the bus conductor, who in turn handed in the parcel to Sham Shui Po Police Station. Upon examination, the contents were found to be 5.503 kilogrammes of prepared opium. The opium is believed to have originated in Nepal. No arrest has been made in connection with this seizure and enquiries are continuing.
