1.

I have now had a chance to talk with you on the telephone about your letter of 10 May about Peter Law in Bangkok. As I told you a few days ago, Peter was evacuated from Bangkok to Hong Kong because of some rather disturbing incidents indicating that he was having serious problems related to his mental stability.

2. It has been decided that he will go back to Bangkok, in fact, as he has just about reached normal retiring age in the Hong Kong Police, he will be retired during the next few months. The Hong Kong Government are in the process of choosing a successor for him.

3.

I shall have an interest in the succession to Peter as I am about to become Hi Ambassador in Laos, which was very much Peter's parish, and I shall try to ensure that a good man is appointed.

4. This is all a great pity as in the past Peter has done some superlatively good work. However, the strains of the past few years in Bangkok, particularly the deaths of his first two wives, were clearly too much for him to bear.
