16 During 2nd Half 1977, 475 vessels were searched by the Customs and Excise Service and guards were placed on 391 others to deter smuggling. A total of 72,210 items of sea cargo and 18,786 postal packets were examined. 2,059 aircraft were searched and 402,059 items of air cargo examined.

17 On 13th July, 1977, Customs and Excise Officers discovered a total of 15 morphine blocks weighing 21.4417 kilogrammes, 0.352 kilogramme of No. 4 heroin, and 0.049 kilogramme of procaine hydrochloride, a Part I Poison, in an unclaimed suitcase at Hong Kong Airport. The case had arrived on a flight from Bangkok the previous evening. No arrest was made and enquiries are continuing.

18 on 17th July 1977, acting on information, Customs and Excise Officers at the Airfreight Terminal examined an unclaimed consignment of 36 baskets of fresh fruit which had arrived from Bangkok. Inside the cargo they discovered 30 morphine blocks weighing 45.56 kilogrammes and a further 23.509 kilogrammes of prepared opium. No arrest was made and enquiries are continuing.

(CE/109/64/77) 19 On 14th July, 1977, the m.v. ‘TAI ON' arrived from Sejingkat, and, as a result of a routine search by Customs and Excise Officers 1.713 kilogrammes of prepared opium were found concealed inside prophylactics discovered in the main switch-board of the engine room. No arrest was made.
