On 23 January 1978, a routine search of mv. Chittin Tanthuwanit by Customs and Excise of revealed 1.3143 kilos of prepared opium hidden in two separate places amongst the deck stores of the vessel. No arrest was made.

1.3143 kilos of prepared opium was discovered hidden amongst the deck stores of the mv. ‘Chittin Tanthuwanit’.
4 On 28 January 1978, a Chinese male LAM Chee-hang (2651/1807/1854) arrived at Hong Kong Airport from Bangkok aboard Singapore Airlines flight SQ 642. When he presented his baggage for examination Customs and Excise officers discovered 0.9896 kilos of prepared opium underneath the lining of his suitcase. LAM was arrested and charged with 'Possession of Dangerous Drugs for the Purpose of Unlawful Trafficking', he was subsequently sentenced to 3 years imprisonment in (CE/109/5/78)
District Court.
5 On 2 February 1978, acting upon information Narcotics Bureau officers discovered the largest single importation of heroin into the Colony for over two decades. Four jerrycans containing 61.9553 kilos of No 3 heroin (purity 15.067 kilos) had been buried under rocks on one of the barren slopes ofthe outlying island of Lamma. In addition to the heroin, twelve morphine blocks bearing the tradi- tional '999' trademark and weighing a total of 14.8173 kilos (12.195 kilos purity) were discovered. Marine Police helped in retrieving the consignment. No arrest was made.
