RITA NIGHTINGALE
Mrs June Evans visited Miss Nightingale yesterday and reported her to be in excellent spirits. She was allowed to see her in the office visiting area again instead of shouting across a space in the public area. Mrs Evans took this to mean that privileges have been restored, which is in fact as we forecast. It seemed likely that after the judicial processes were completed there would be a period of greater severity followed by a relaxation.
Mrs Evans relayed a message from Miss Nightingale to the effect that she was visited by a "Deputy Director-General". presumably of the Corrections Department, that he had been very understanding and that after having had the opportunity of a discussion with him she was much happier and more contented. We shall have to wait until our next visit to discover just who the official was, but the visit could possibly have been sparked by a letter which I wrote recently to the Director- General about the refusal of the prison authorities to allow me to hand over text books to Miss Nightingale.
Whatever the reason, all is quiet on the Nightingale front at the present time.
