on the advice of the Executive Council recently, had
been to earmark about half the area for recreation
and the rest for development.
The spokesman explained that an earlier
proposal to site a Government building in Murray
Barracks had been abandoned. Instead, it will be
sited close to a new Supreme Court building which will
front Queensway and be adjacent to the proposed develop-
ment area. Flagstaff House, the present home of the
Commander British Forces, will be retained.
It was emphasised that the Government had been
concerned to ensure that the release of land produced
benefits for the population of Hong Kong at large, as
well as those who might enjoy the additional amenity
which would be afforded to the Central area and Wanchai.
"By reserving some land for private development in the
barracks area, it is estimated that a sum approaching
$700 million might be raised in sales, and by resiting
the proposed Government office building from the Murray
Barracks Area to Queensway, sites in the former area
would be released for sale and could raise more than
$400 million" the spokesman added.
"Equally, the Government is concerned that
the very best use should be made of the recreational
