The figure of illegal immigrants interviewed and accepted as having evaded control since 30 November 1974 is 20,654. The up-to-date ratio of interceptions against evasions is 1:3.68. (Allowing a six months surfacing lag of the evaders, the running ratio as at 30 November 1977 is now 1:4.27).
Macao

During the month 3 illegal immigrants arrested in May were repatriated to Macao. In addition, the two "snakeheads" who had assisted 15 Macao illegal immigrants on 30 May were convicted and sentenced to 9 months and 6 months imprisonment respectively on 6 June.

Since November 1975, the total of illegal immigrants interviewed and accepted as having entered from Macao is 2,032. Of these 260 were arrested, 1,466 surfaced through ROP claiming illegal entry from Macao and 306 surfaced through ROP falsely claiming illegal entry from elsewhere.
Registration of illegals

During June 1,094 persons (compared with 1,354 last month) registered with the Registration of Persons Office, claiming to have entered Hong Kong illegally from various sources. The figure includes 1,031 persons (compared with 1,237 last month) claiming to have come from China and 29 (compared with 52 last month) from Macao.

Since 1962, the Registration of Persons Office has registered a total of 326,987 persons who claimed to have entered Hong Kong illegally from various sources, primarily China. The total since January 1970 is 113, 232 of whom 95, 246 claimed to have come from China and 6,053 from Macao. The true figure of illegal immigrants from China is somewhat lower and the true figure of Macao somewhat higher, because of attempts to conceal the true place of origin on registration to avoid repatriation. Separate statistics of confirmed place of origin are shown in para 10 for China, and para 12 for Macao,

The attached appendices B - E and H give details of arrests of illegal immigrants from China during June.
(N.B. In this series of memoranda Appendix F usually covers arrests of illegal immigrants from Macao and Appendix G usually covers illegal immigration, vessel seized. They are omitted as there are nil returns for June under these headings).
