Since 1 January 1972 (when the numbers entering legally started escalating) to date, the total figure for legal arrivals excluding CPG passport holders is 173,885. 102,865 of these, ie Overseas Chinese and Non-Cantonese who arrived after 30 June 1972, were landed on 12 months limitation of stay and should have applied periodically for extensions of stay. However, our records show that 9,953 of them have not done so and this suggests that they are no longer living in Hong Kong.

4.

Persons who enter legally from China and who are landed for a limited period ie Overseas Chinese and Non-Cantonese, must obtain Declarations of Identity and re-entry visas for Hong Kong if they wish to travel. December the traffic in such persons was as follows:-

During December 1977, 134 illegal immigrants were arrested compared with 118 last month.

6.

Of the 134 arrested, 47 were land crossers, 44 bay crossers and 43 sea crossers. Most of them were between 16 25 years of age. All were processed at Ta Ku Ling. 116 of these arrested illegal immigrants were repatriated to China during the month, and the remaining 18 were awaiting a decision. One illegal immigrant arrested in October was allowed to stay in December. The highest number of illegal immigrants arrested on any one day during the month was 30 on 28 December.

7.

On 22, 23 and 27 December, a total of 7 illegal immigrants succeeded in entering Hong Kong by hiding on board cargo trains from Canton but were later arrested by Police. 2 of them sustained head injuries while jumping off the train and were sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment. They were repatriated to China after release from hospital on 6 January 1978. The other 5 were returned to China on 24 and 28 December respectively.

On 26 December, a group of 30 illegal immigrants boarded a commune junk at Lim Shan, China and landed at Perimeter 27 (Tai Long Wan).
