peatedly refused the request on the rationale that this was not related to teaching.

On May, 20, 1977, the "hinese Catholic Weekly (Kung Kau Pao) broke the silence

of the Church over the issue. In the Editorial, it was admitted that this kind of

financial malmanagement like that of Golden Jubilee School was very common among

various educational institutions run by the Church or otherwise. "It is very

regretful that these kinds of misbehaviours occur in the Church. We admit that this is one of the instances that the Church has been unloyal to the Gospel. Here we

would like to make our public confession. At the same time, we deeply believe that

these kind of affairs cannot make us fall down once and forever, because the strength

of the Gospel will definitely drive us to repentance and to start anew.

On May 27, 1977, the Chinese Catholic Weekly issued another editorial stressing

that the Church needed not rely on power nor wealth in her service to society.

13 On May 2, 1977, eight representatives of Form 5 students, after finishing the

public examination, went to see the acting Principal and submitted a letter

signed by all the Form 5 students requesting the school authority to make clarification

publicly. The acting Principal refused on the ground that they could not represent

all the students.

On May 31, 1977, the Form 5 students asked the representatives of all classes

to distribute and sign a latter which would be submitted to the Principal to

repeat their request. However, the acting Principal ordered all the form masters

and mistresses to take away the latters from the students, saying that the letter

had not been approved. The students grew annoyed.

15 On 2, June, the teachers received a letter from the ICAC stating that there was

no evidence of corruption so the case would not be dealt with.

On June 3, 1977, the School asked the teachers to renew their contracts. A new

clause about dismissal of teachers was inserted. The old clause observed the Code

of Aids for subsidized schools that teachers in breach of terms of contract

shold be given oral warning first, then written, then warning again before they can

be dismissed. The new clause stipulated that if any clauses in the contract is broken

ssarily any warning). The teacher thought this clause unreasonable. The Sa Committee set the deadline of renewing the contract on June 10.
