8. The assault on students

Such being the case, the parents became more and more an-

xious and disturbed. The situation worsened when at least 5

students were assaulted by the non-teaching staff on May 3.

At 2 pm on May 3, all the form 2 students had a unified

English test. According to the new school regulation, letters

had already been sent to parents to inform them of the test three

days in advance and the final permission of the principal was

obtained. At 1.40 pm, the form 2 students came back for their

test only to find that the main gates were closed while several

non-teaching staff at the side-gate asked to check the names

and classes of the students and why they returned.

Anxious to

be on time for the test (as there were over 200 form 2 students

taking part in the test and 15 lautes would be too short fur

the checking of all the students), the stuaeuts tried to get

into the school while the non-teaching staff linked their hands

to form a human barrier. It was then that some of the students

were scratched, pushed down and kicked on the sput. One of them,

Ng Wai-man, was grabbed from behind on the neck and received

bruises as a result of the incident.

9. The call for the police

When a number of teachers and students asked to see the

principal over the non-teaching staff's assault on the students

on May 5, the principal refused to see them, and to the shock

of everybody, called the police claiming that she was intimidated.

Meanwhile the laboratory assistant took photos of the students

and teachers.

10%. The press conference

On May 7, parents decided to hold a press conference to make

what happened known to the public. Mr. Szeto, though having got

a warning letter from the Education Department for helping the

parents and for taking up a task exceeding his duty as a school

principal, was willing to help the parents again with the press

conference.
