A) The rumours after the resignation of Sister Leung Kit-fun

While teachers were waiting patiently for the results of

the investigation from the Education Department, rumours of

political nature started spreading within and outside the school.

i) As early as April 14, when the teachers were having a

meeting with the Management Committee, there were rumours from

catholic students of the school that Sister Leung was toppled

by the "leftist" teachers. Soon, similar rumours spread out in

a number of parishes. The matter, originally concerned with

mere financial irregularities, thus became very intricate.

Students began conjecturing the real reason for Sister Leung's

resignation. They questioned the teachers about the truth.

On May 1, a letter from a reader signed "a student's

parent" was published in the "Popular Daily". The letter pointed

out that a certain Sister Leung, former principal of a girls'

school in Homantin, had resigned for political reasons. The

parent went on to say that the school had already been infiltrated

through by "left-wing" teachers, Recently the conflict between

the former principal and the "leftist" teachers intensified and

became so acute that the principal was bombarded by the teachers

and forced to resign. The letter also stated that there were fre

quent closed-door staff meetings in the staff room before and after

Sister Leung's resignation. All studen‍ts were forbidden to walk

near the scene. These meetings, the parent said, were intended

to conspire against the ex-principal.

B) Refusal of the Management Committee to clarify_the_rumours

1) Seeing that the rumourshad become so widespread, the

teachers wrote to ask the Management Committee haping they would
