The most important proposal was that
a second new school should be opened that would offer former
pupils of the Golden Jubilee school the alternative of a system
of education similar to that at their old school under its
original principal. The Hong Kong Government have accepted the Committee's recommendations and have already taken a
number of practical steps to facilitate their implementation. These steps include making available suitable premises for the
new school and appointing a management committee. At the suggestion of the new management committee, the Department of Education have agreed to withdraw the warning letters that
were issued to Golden Jubilee School teachers in mid 1977 (see paragraph 5 above), in order to make it possible for the
16 dissident teachers to be offered contracts at the new
school.
10. Initial indications are that, although some of the teachers believe that the interim report of the Committee of Inquiry does not go far enough in vindicating them, broadly speaking the report has been welcomed by both Hong Kong public opinion and the leaders of the dissidents. All the parties involved now seem ready to collaborate in making the proposed compromise work, in the best interest of the children at the
schools.
