for organization and group action, operating an efficient and speedy communication net-work which enabled several hundred of them to assemble at
short notice. Observers realized how difficult
it would be for a disciplinarian principal like Hilda Kwan to assume control over such a belligererü assembly of students strongly prejudiced against the school management over its mishandling of public funds last year.
It also became known amongst the teaching profession that the Chan Chung Ling group of teachers were in fact highly successful and effective "educators" in their own style. Over the past few years they had been spending a considerable amount of their leisure time with their students, helping them to organize extracurricular activities, giving them free private tuition, discussing with them their own problems and expounding and imparting social philosophy and ideas which the teachers themselves had acquired during their own university days. It was a dynamic and aggressive brand of non-conformist free thinking enhanced by anti- establishment attitudes, sentiments and convictions. A common question that some disturbed and worried supervisors and principals of secondary schools asked was whether Hong Kong's education system aimed to produce such radical thinking graduates as teachers. Is there not a danger, they pointed out, that a situation of conflict would arise if and when radical graduates like the Chan group were to be employed by institutions whose management and leadership belong to the conservative school? If a new school opens by taking a large number of young graduates all in one year, dues this not determine the character of the school to be aggressive and provocative as conditioned by the mentality of the new teaching staff?
To
what extent has the new generation and the new
breed of free thinking teachers already made their
presence felt in our secondary schools?
