HONG KONG : MPs LETTERS: THE RT. HON. TONY BENN MP AND MISS JANET FOOKES MP

1.

The Rt. Hon. Tony Benn MP (Labour, Bristol South East) has written to Mr Rowlands and Miss Janet Fookes MP (Conservative Plymouth Drake) has written to Lord Goronwy-Roberts about the Golden Jubilee School dispute in Hong Kong.

2. Mr Benn encloses correspondence which he has received. from the two representatives of the teachers from the school who have been in London to enlist Parliamentary and public support, together with a letter from the Labour Club of the

School of Oriental and African Studies.

3. Miss Fookes encloses further correspondence from the Chairman of the Education Action Group in Hong Kong. She previously wrote to the Secretary of State on 3 June enclosing a letter from the Group. Lord Goronwy-Roberts' reply to Miss Fookes was passed to the Chairman of the Group who claims that the Minister's letter was factually wrong.

4. The details of the dispute are given in the attached background note. Both letters have now been largely overtaken by the publication of the interim report of the Committee of Inquiry referred to in paragraph 9 of the background note. The Minister may however wish to reply to the accusation that his previous letter to Miss Fookes was factually wrong. I recommend therefore that the Minister should reply to Mr Benn and Miss

Fookes on the lines of the attached self-explanatory drafts.
