MANIFESTO OF THE. "GOLDEN JUBILEE ISSUE"
CITIZENS' ASSEMBLY (MAY 28, 1978)
Attended by over 10,000 citizens in Hong Kong on May 28, 1978 at the Victoria Fark, the "Golden Jubilee Issue" Citizens' Assembly unamiously resolved the
llowing manifesto:
"The Golden Jubilee Issue is not only an educational problem, it is at the same time a social problem. All Hong Kong citizens should show special concern on this issue, to probe into the real facts, to distinguish the black and the white, and to join hands to press for a reasonable and thorough solution through stepwise efforts.
The most needed action right now is to re-open the school at the original premises, in order to save several hundred students from roaming around and being hindered from study. Our opinion is: re-open the school immediately, and investigate afterwards. We cannot just study preventive measures without first attending to the immediate needs of the students. The Education Department's decision to close down the school is hasty, prejudiced and completely erroneous. To err once is bad enough, it is high time to drive back to the right course. Therefore, Golden Jubilee School must be re-opened immediately at the original premises. This is not only a demand from the students, the teachers and the parents, but also an earnest demand from people of all walks of life.
In order to strive for the re-opening of Golden Jubilee School, the Assembly hereby pledges the following to all Hong Kong citizens and all organizations: 1. CITIZENS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE ARE CALLED UPON TO JOIN WITH
ENTHUSIASISM THE ALL CITIZENS COMMITTEE ON STRIVING FOR RE-OPENING OF GOLDEN JUBILEE SCHOOL' ALL INTERESTED INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE NOT YET AN ORGANIZATION TO AFFILIATE TO ARE ASKED TO CONTACT OTHER INDIVIDUALS OF SAME OCCUPATIONS, OR OF THE SAME INSTITUTIONS, OR OF THE SAME DISTRICT TO FORM CONCERN COMMITTEE" TO FACILIATE CO-ORDINATION.
