5. Opportunities for sixth form and tertiary education
5.1
There is already a range of opportunities open for students completing Form V, and these opportunities will be developed further in the coming years. Such students may proceed either directly upon completing Form V or after a sixth form course to the following forms of tertiary education:-
(i) to a technician or commercial course in a
technical institute or the Polytechnic;
(ii) to a course in an institution providing
training for a particular profession, such as the colleges of education and the nurse training colleges, or the proposed Hang Seng School of Commerce that will provide training primarily for the banking profession;
(iii) to the four year diploma courses offered
by the registered post-secondary colleges;
(iv) to one of the two universities;
(v) to a variety of other types of education
and training in Hong Kong;
or (vi) to universities and other educational
institutions abroad.
This chapter is concerned principally with the places in institutions that are provided or assisted by Government, but the existence of private institutions in Hong Kong and of places in institutions abroad taken by Hong Kong students should be kept in mind, as the places in these institutions provide an additional outlet beyond the targets of the Government's own expansion programmes.
5.2
The Government will continue the policy derived from the 1974 White Paper of providing a subsidised Lower or Middle Form VI place (with progression to Upper Form VI in schools which have a two-year sixth form structure) for up to one-third of the students entering subsidised Form IV places two years previously.
