MIR MAIDEEN'S COMMENTS ON THE EVACUATION OF HONG KONG DEPENDENTS FROM SAIGON

1. Mr Maideen has made the following points about the future of the evacuation of Hong Kong dependents from Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City): there are 726 dependents who have entry permits to Hong Kong remaining in South Vietnam. Mr Maideen considers that it will take five more flights to evacuate these people. The last flight would probably take place in June. Mr Maideen would then plan to spend a month winding up his own affairs and leave Saigon by the end of July.

2. Of the ex-Embassy local staff who have been helping Mr Maideen in Saigon, four together with their families will leave on the last evacuation flight for destinations in France and the US. Alternatively it might be arranged that they leave on one of the regular Air France flights which have just been started to Saigon. The remainder of the local staff want to remain in Vietnam.

3. Mr Maideen considered that as further cases for emigration to Ilong Kong cropped up after his office in Saigon is wound up, these individuals should be able to leave by Air France. He saw no need for anybody from the Embassy in Hanoi to go down to Saigon to arrange this. It would be sufficient for the Embassy to hand over lists of those with entry permits to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hanoi for processing.
