stratum in proportion to the number of persons engaged in the strata

rather than in proportion to the number of establishments in the stratum.

Since there are fewer large companies, the latter method would exclude

all companies with more than 100 employees. The sample frame was

obtained from the Census & Statistics Department with the assistance of

the Employment Section and the Wholesale and Retail Section.

In addition to the numbers of establishments sampled in the strata

tabulated above, an additional 10% of the establishments were taken

from each stratum to replace establishments found to have closed down,

to have faulty addresses or no employees. A total of 560 establishments

were sampled.

Street

The sample of employees was obtained from the frame of domestic

living quarters kept by the Census and Statistics Department.

blocks were sampled with a probability of selection proportional to the

number of living quarters in the street block. In the second stage of

sampling, a simple random sample of 13 living quarters per street block

was selected. In the third stage of sampling, all employed persons

within the above definition who were dwelling in the living quarter were

selected for interview. A total of 2,089 employed persons were

interviewed. This sample of employees belonged to a large spectrum of

occupations and industries and information on the industrial or

occupational variations can be obtained by post-stratification.
