1. Thank you for your letter of 12 April to John Stewart, in which you requested more details of the unemployment levels in Hong Kong.

Briefly, of a workforce of approximately:

1.6 million in 1971, an average of 4.5% were unemployed 1.9 million in 1975, an average of 9.0% were unemployed 1.9 million in 1976, an average of 4.4% were unemployed 1.9 million in 1977, an average of 4.0% were unemployed

Thus, apart from the slump in 1974/75, Hong Kong's unemployment situation is relatively low and stable by western standards. However, I have asked Hong Kong to provide you with more information.
