There are special conditions which have to be satisfied by women who marry after ataining age 60. Details should be obtained from the Department of Labour & Social Security.

31. SPECIAL PROVISIONS AS TO MEN

A man who has reached the age of 65 may claim an old-age pension on his wife's insurance if the following conditions are satisfied:-

(i) his wife is over 60 years of age;

(ii)

he is and has been for not less than 10 years, permanently incapable of self-support by reason of physical or mental infirmity and is likely to remain so incapable for a prolonged period; (iii) he is residing with and is and has been wholly

or mainly maintained by his wife during this time (in the case that she is dead for not less than 10 years up to the time of her death); and (iv) his wife satisfies the contribution conditions

of old age pension.

32. FOR HOW LONG ARE OLD AGE PENSIONS PAYABLE

An old age pension is generally payable for life, whether or not the beneficiary has retired from work, and is not affected by earnings or private means.

If a widow entitled to an old age pension by virtue of her late husband's insurance or a widower entitled to the pension on his wife's insurance, re-marries, the pension ceases to be payable.

33. WHAT ARE THE CONTRIBUTION CONDITIONS?

There are two contribution conditions:

FIRST: 156 contributions must have been paid between 3 October 1955 and

the date of attaining pensionable age;

SECOND: There must have been paid or been credited an average of not less

than 50 contributions a year since the 3 October 1955.

If the second condition is not satisfied, reduced rates of benefit may be payable provided that there is an annual average of not less than 13 contributions paid or credited.

34. HOW AND WHEN TO CLAIM AN OLD AGE PENSION

At any time within four months before reaching pensionable age, application should be made for a form at the Department of Labour and Social Security. When completed it should be returned to that Department, together with birth certificate and (if married) marriage certificate, and spouse's

birth certificate.

If a claim is delayed more than 6 months after reaching pensionable age the claimant shall lose some benefit.
