net weekly income below which parents are entitled to free school meals for their children were substantially raised in August 1977 following the increase in the school meals charge, and were increased again on 14 November 1977* in line with supplementary benefit levels. The figures quoted in the table apply from 14 November 1977 and incorporate both increases.

For larger families. In respect of each child:

£7.40 is added at each incremental point in every additional line.

£1.25 is to be deducted at each incremental point in every additional column.

School milk

Free school milk (one-third of a pint a day) is available for all pupils attending special schools and for all children under seven attending other maintained schools. Children over seven and under 12 may also receive free milk if this is recommended by a school medical officer. It is not necessary to apply for free milk for children under seven but if the parents of a child over seven want the child to be considered for free milk they should apply to the Education Office or an Education Welfare Officer.

School uniform or clothing

Local education authorities can help in cases of need with clothing and footwear, including clothing for sports and physical training, and towards the cost of school uniform where this is a requirement of the school. Ask for details at the Education Office or from an Education Welfare Officer.

Sickness benefit

Sickness benefit is paid to people normally employed or self-employed whilst they are incapable of work due to illness or disablement.
