What is this benefit?

Supplementary benefit is a weekly payment you can have if the money you are getting now is less than you need to live on.

You can get the benefit if you are in part-time work or not in any work.

You can get the benefit if you live on a pension.

You can get the benefit if you are sick or disabled.

You can get the benefit if you are bringing up children on your own.

You can still claim the benefit even if you have savings. But if you have more than £1200 then this could affect how much benefit you may get.

You cannot get supplementary benefit if you are in full-time work. You cannot get supplementary benefit if you are a couple living together and the man is in full-time work. But if you are in full-time work and have children you can claim Family Income Supplement. Get leaflet FIS.] from a post office or social security office.

How much will you get?

But you do not need to fill in the guide if you don't want to. Simply fill in the claim form on page 2 and let your social security office do the rest.

When you get supplementary benefit you and your family may also get other things free like school meals, milk and vitamins, dental treatment, glasses and NHS prescriptions.
