Maximum overtime permitted
The law stipulates that work may be performed beyond eight hours a day provided that the employee is paid for the overtime work but the maximum overtime permitted is not laid down.

For both male and female workers:
Not more than 4 hours per day and 72 hours per month. (No employee shall work for more than 12 hours in any one day).
For children (aged 12-13) and young persons (aged 14-15):
Overtime work not permitted.
The law does not stipulate the maximum permissible overtime. In transportation activities overtime work is generally prohibited unless permission in writing has been obtained from the Director- General of Labour. In commercial and industrial operations, an employee may be required to work overtime where the work is of a continuous nature for which interruption may cause damage thereto. For other types of overtime work, the approval of the Director-General of Labour is normally required.
