It is difficult to compare meaningfully the

quantum of compensation in view of the differing standards of living. In Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia cash benefits to permanently disabled employees are payable for life, and in Singapore the maximum compensation for permanent incapacity or death is higher than Hong Kong in absolute terms. On the other hand, compensation for temporary incapacity in Hong Kong is doubled that in Singapore. In addition, Hong K

ong's medical rehabilitation centres for the physically handicapped, with charges at nominal rates only and provision for the waiving of such charges for those who are unable to pay, means that injured workmen in Hong Kong are assured of virtually free treatment for life, including replacement and repair of prosthetic applicances, on a non-contributory basis. They may also qualify for ublic Assistance and Welfare Allowances where eligible (see paragraph 10.2 and Table 19).

10.13 Compensation for occupational diseases including pneumoconiosis is payable in Indonesia, the

hilippines, Singapore and Thailand. Compensation for pneumoconiosis will soon be made a legal requirement in Hong nong.

10.14 Table 21 gives details of the employment injury schemes in all the territories. Rates of contribution to the Malaysian and the Philippine schemos are given in Appendices XVIII and XIX respectively.

Unemployment benefits

10.15

None of the six countries provides cash benefits for unemployment and invariably this question assumes a low profile, particularly so in Singapore. It is understood, however, that the authorities concerned will assist the unemployed to look for jobs. Korea is the only country which goes as far as providing temporary jobs (mainly in public works to the unemployed until they have found
