Rest days

Hong Kong provides one rest day a week for all manual workers and non-manual workers earning $2,000 or less per month. The principle of providing one rest day a week is also observed in the other countries. Invariably the actual day of rest is determined by the employer although in Indonesia and Korea the law is silent in this

respect.

Maternity protection

In Hong Kong a female employee is entitled to 10 weeks maternity leave (4 weeks before and 6 weeks after. the expected date of confinement) which may be extended by a further 4 weeks for medical reasons. Insofar as the normal length of maternity leave is concerned, only Indonesia (1% months before and 12 months after the expected date of confinement) has a longer period than Hong Kong. Korea, Malaysia and Thailand allow a period of 60 days (with possible variations before and after childbirth), followed by

Singapore (8 weeks - 4 before and 4 after). With a rate of 6 weeks (2 before and 4 after), the Philippines is the least generous.
