In the jargon of civil aviation the "freedoms" are (for the aircraft of State "A"):
First Freedom:
Second Freedom:
Third Freedom:
Fourth Freedom:
Fifth Freedom:
Sixth Freedom:
The privilege of flying over the territory of State "B" without landing.
The privilege of landing in State "B" for technical reasons only, ie for such purposes as refuelling but not to pick up or set dorm any passengers, cargo or mail.
The privilege to set down in State "B" traffic (ie passengers, cargo or mail) picked up in
State "A".
The privilege of picking up in State "B" traff: destined for State A. This is closely linked with the third freedom.
The privilege of picking up or setting down in State "B" traffic which is destined for, or has come from, State "C". As an example, Pan Am operates on the route New York-London-Frankfur with full traffic rights. It is entitled to carry third and fourth freedom traffic between New York and London, and between New York and Frankfurt; and fifth freedom traffic between London and Frankfurt.
