To prevent
All these aspects should be planned together with proper consultation. At present, the development is piecemeal and uncoordinated. this the Petition requests a proper independent study.
The Society has requested, at least two times, to meet the Urban Council. These approaches have been refused. It was clear that when the Urban Council made their decision that they did so on inadequate information. This sort of occurrence should not happen again.
The Hong Kong Heritage Society realises the issues are complex and span the activities of many Government departments, and we think you would welcome an opportunity to consider this matter in the depth it deserves. Therefore in order to help you before the time for decision making, we would wish to meet you to explain the scope, and evidence of the Petition, so that you would be fully informed and be in a position to participate in the decision making. We therefore request a meeting of a few members of our Society with you on this matter before any decisions are made.
In conclusion, we think you should know some of the popular reaction to this matter. The Heritage Society has been collecting signatures for the Petition. At this stage we have 14,360, or approximately double the turnout at the Urban Council elections. Recently we set up a desk outside the portico of the K.C.R., to collect signatures. The response was anasing. In only 5 days at one place 7,926 signatures were obtained. People were queuing up to sign. We asked them the kind of work they did and you will be interested to know that they were, for example, shopworkers, factory workers, and clerks. It is evident that many ordinary people of Hong Kong positively wish the buildings to stay. They also deserve to have this vital area of Kowloon developed as a result of proper planning and study of the total noods
of the area.
Please may we have your reply at your earliest convenience as
feel this is a matter of urgency.
