IN THE MATTER OF THE Proposed Redevelopment of Tsim Sha Tsui Peninsula and in the matter of the preservation of the premises formerly functioning as the Terminal Station of the Kowloon Canton Railway, and its adaptation in consonance with such Redevelopment:
1.
The Humble Petition of the Hong Kong Heritage Society SHEWTH:
Your Majesty's Petitioners are a Society formed in April, 1977 and duly registered in accordance with the Laws of Hong Kong.
2.
This Society, called The Hong Kong Heritage Society, was formed as a result of a growing concern at the accelerating rate of destruction of Hong Kong's cultural heritage, and in particular of certain major historic landmarks and attractive natural features of this Territory. The aims and objects of the Society are set out in Exhibit 1
3.
Lest perhaps it is thought that this is an Association of irresponsible persons, it should be mentioned that the membership comprises people from all walks of life, including academics, lawyers, architects, engineers, planners, and other professional people, as well as many lay people of Hong Kong.
4.
The Society has no vested or financial interests in the outcome of this matter.
5.
The decision to petition Your Majesty on this matter was not taken lightly. It was made after much deliberation, and only when all other attempts to achieve Your Petitioners' objects, culminating in a petition to His Excellency the Governor of Hong Kong, Sir Murray MacLehose, had failed.
6.
The Hong Kong Government has, over the past eight years, consistently ignored or dismissed the points and arguments, petitions and appeals put forward by groups and individuals in Hong Kong, and the manifestly large body of public opinion which favours the retention of the KCR building with its integral clock-tower, in its entirety.
7.
Despite these past rejections of our plea, we trust that Your Majesty, on considering all the facts, will see fit to grant this Petition, which is for the preservation of the Kowloon Canton Railway Station building
(hereafter referred to as the KCR building) and for the careful reconsideration of development plans for the Tsim Sha Tsui Peninsula as a whole.
