29.4% and 27.5% respectively of total goods imported from China on all modes. In addition, KCR carries approximately 86% of all livestock imported from China. The revenue derived from one goods train is considerable, being currently 18 times higher than revenue from one passenger train.
Existing Rolling Stock
5
To meet the demand for services outlined above, the railway
has the following rolling stock:
12 diesel locomotives, with acquisition dates ranging from 1954 to 1977;
96 passenger carriages, with acquisition dates ranging from 1910 to 1974, when 40 new coaches were bought from Japan;
101 goods wagons (all goods imported from China are carried in China-owned wagons).
Existing Plans for Capital Investment
6
There are currently twelve KCR projects in the Public Works Programme (mostly in Category A) at a total estimated cost of approximately $241 million. The principal ones are:
(a)
(b)
double-tracking all the 34 kilometres of single-track railway from Hung Hom to Lo Wu, with remodelling of stations as appropriate. Work is well under way on double-tracking from Hung Hom to Sha Tin, one-third of the system, and a two-year programme for double- tracking a further one-third, from Sha Tin to Tai Po Market, will begin this month. A new double-track tunnel will be built through Beacon Hill and this should be available towards the end of 1980. The remaining double-tracking from Tai Po Market to Lo Wu (currently Category B) will go ahead once these other items have been completed. As double-tracking is implemented, colour light signalling will be introduced, with track circuiting and centralised traffic control;
construction of a marshalling yard at Lo Wu to facilitate the despatch and receipt of trains to and from the People's Republic of China. This is expected to be fully operational shortly;
