The British Section of the Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR) is undergoing a considerable capital investment programme to assist it in serving the increasing population of the New Territories and transporting the expanding and substantial freight traffic from China for export to and through Hong Kong. To appreciate fully the scope of the investment projects already in hand and the further major proposals for modernisa- tion now under consideration, the following background information on the current scope of the railway's operations may be useful.

Existing Services

KCR comprises 34 kilometres of single track and nine stations and provides services for:

international passengers travelling between Kowloon and China (in conjunction with the Chinese Section);

(a)

(b)

the suburban population living in Sha Tin and in Kowloon along the KCR alignment;

(c)

the expanding rural community northwards of Sha Tin; and

(d) freight traffic between Hong Kong and the People's

Republic of China.

Passenger Services

For the year 1977/78, some 20 million passenger trips are expected on the KCR. To accommodate these passengers, the railway is providing 44 services per day, that is, 22 fourteen-coach trains in each direction.

Goods Services

KCR currently runs up to 10 goods trains of 30 wagons per day. The annual volume of goods imported from China has risen from 726,000 metric tons in 1971 to 1,030,000 metric tons in 1975; these tonnages are
