diameter.
Air Conditioning
A.33
The provision of air conditioning on the new cars is recommended.
The justification for this turns not only on the desirability of
improving travel conditions during the hot and humid summer
months but also on the need to adopt a design of window that
prevents passengers from leaning out, because of the restricted
clearances.
Passenger Capacity
A.34
The passenger capacity of the proposed car (with standees at 6 per square metre) would be between 180 and 210 depending on the proportion of seating. The lower figure would be achieved if a 2 + 1 seating layout were adopted (as on the three cars shown in Table A.1) while the higher figure would imply the use of a
1 + 1 seating layout. A somewhat higher total figure might be
achieved if longitudiual seating were adopted as on the MTRC
cars.
Other features
A.35
Other features of modern light rail vehicles that would be
incorporated in the proposed car include:
automatic couplers
pantograph current collection (750 v.d.c. overhead)
resilient wheels to reduce wheel squeal on tight
radius curves and reduce general noise levels
magnetic track brakes and track sanding equipment
in order to achieve an emergency deceleration of 3.0m/sec2 irrespective of rail conditions
inductive control equipment initially for operation of points and pre-emption of traffic signals (mainly
