A scheme

for the Light Rail Vehicles at critical junctions. of this type was prepared, but the flyover concept appeared to have numerous advantages. These included lower capital cost, reduced disruption to LRV's and other road traffic during construction, and providing additional benefits to other road users without disbenefiting the LRT system. The underpass concept on the other hand, would impose major constraints on the location of LRT stops and would impede the possible subsequent construction of tunnels on the TR Island Line alignment. The use of single deck LRV's will permit the flyovers to be built to a lower height than with the existing trams, thus reducing the length of ramps.

Development of the Bus System

Completion of the Central Tunnel for LRT would allow substantial, improvements to bus movements. In particular, at this stage it will be possible to achieve the bus priority route from Wanchai to a new Central Bus Terminal on the site of the Central Market.

The section of tram route along Queensway would be converted to a busway, which would then lead into Des Voeux Road Central near Statue Square, allowing a near-bus only

precinct at the banks, where currently buses, trams and service vehicles share the road space. From Statue Square, along Des Voeux Road Central as far as the proposed new Central Bus Terminal, it would be possible to operate large flows of buses, since the LRT along this section will be underground.

An examination should be made of the feasibility of providing improved interchange facilities for passengers by means of a low cost transfer facility between cross harbour and Aberdeen Tunnel buses and the LRT at the intersection of Canal Road and Hennessy Road.
