Segregation Measures Tramway segregation measures will be

implemented during 1980 ready for the operation of the Light Rail Vehicles in 1981. In general, fences or kerbs

will be installed alongside the tracks to deter vehicles and pedestrians from using the LRT right-of-way. Fences would

be used in locations of intensive pedestrian activity, primarily for safety reasons. The provision of fences would make more

acceptable the proposed reduction in clearance between passing

trams.

The extent of segregation measures is shown in Figure 6,

from which it may be seen that near total segregation is planned

between Central and Sai Wan Ho. The urgency of achieving

these segregation measures by 1981 should be stressed,

otherwise the initial LRV purchase of 90 vehicles would be

insufficient to operate the whole service.

Track Realignment Also shown in Figure 6 are the locations

at which it will be necessary to increase the distance between

the two tracks to accommodate the wider vehicles. This will

be achieved by relaying one of the two tram tracks such

that the distance between them is at least 1.533m which

will allow a clearance of 0.3m between passing vehicles*.

The new Light Rail Vehicle will not be able to negotiate the

tightest of the existing curves on the tramway track, and these will need to be realigned. Many of the sharp curves

are at reversing loups which will not be needed for the new double ended Light Rail Vehicles. Others, however, notably those at Western Market will require realignment, and the

feasibility of easing the curves at this point has been examined.

A possible scheme for achieving this in the short term is shown

in Figure 7; it is necessary to realign Connaught Road at

this point to achieve the necessary curve easing.

by the relevant Hong Kong authorities.
