Depot The new LRV depot at Kennedy Town is sited on the

reclamation near the existing bus terminus. The land is

in Government ownership and lies astride the approach roads

to a possible future cross harbour road tunnel. Construction

of the depot will preclude implementation of this scheme as

currently planned. The site is also currently allocated for use us a sand depot for a period of 3 years (until late 1980); work on the LRV depot will need to start very quickly,

and an alternative location for the sand depot will be needed.

Several adjacent plots of land are understood to be available; the maximum area available for the depot is about 11 600m2,

and an initial design suggests this will be sufficient

to store the first batch of Light Rail Vehicles. Access to

the depot would be by a new track along Victoria Road. In the future, consideration will need to be given to improving this access by using the site of the market at Kennedy Town or, in the longer term, integrating an access route with any development along the Waterfront.

It is suggested that workshop and maintenance facilities for the whole fleet be provided at Kennedy Town, plus storage facilities for 40 or so vehicles. Temporary storage areas for the remainder of the initial fleet would also be

provided, but these could be relinquished on the opening of a storage depot at Chai Wan in 1983. Several other

options for depots and workshops have been considered, some involving the retention of the existing Sharp Street Depot for longer periods, but all require the availability of a new site on a permanent or temporary basis by the time the new Light Rail Vehicles arrive. The final decision between these options will depend on the availability of sites and issues of operating convenience.
