SUMMARY

This is the last of the reports prepared for the Island

Corridor Study. It concentrates on the strategy recommended by

the Study Team and discusses the phased implementation of the

proposals.

The series of eight Interim Reports prepared during the

course of the study reported on different stages of the work and

this Draft Final Report has been prepared as a continuation of

the series. For convenience it briefly summarises some relavent

aspects contained in earlier reports.

The Study Team recommend that the public transport

strategy for the Island Corridor should be based on the development of a system of Light Rail Transit (LRT) and buses. Phased implementation

of this strategy would result in an LRT system with two interchange

facilities with the Modified Initial System of the MTR, augmented by

an improved bus system, containing express buses and bus priority

measures.

A significant aspect of the strategy is the adaptability

of the LRT system proposed to operate on-street in both a segregated

and unsegregated right of way and in tunnels. This flexibility

means the strategy is less sensitive to changes in travel demand

or the overall development of Hong Kong Island; such changes will

affect only the phasing proposed for the recommended strategy, not

the strategy itself.

The report concludes with a description of the detail

action required to begin implementation of the proposals and lists

key areas requiring immediate action once the recommendation is

agreed.
