delivered in Hong Kong arrive on May 1 1978 with delivery continuing thereafter at the rate of 2 cars every week. These rail cars will be accom- modated on tracks being laid at Kowloon Bay Depot and will then commence commissioning. Factory testing of the first units of the automatic fare collection equipment commenced in
January 1978 in San Diego in the United States and this important contract is also going well. All the electrical and mechanical contractors in the various countries concerned have justified the Corporation's confidence in placing contracts with them and first impressions are that manu- facture is of very satisfactory quality.
Since the end of the year the option available since 1976 has been exercised to purchase a further 70 cars from Metro-Cammell which will allow trains on the Modified Initial System to be increased from 4-car to 6-car in 1981. It is
noteworthy to record that the contractor agreed for this purpose to convert the option price from a sterling price with price variation to Hong Kong dollar fixed price and that the Export Credits Guarantee Department in the United Kingdom has agreed to guarantee a related Hong Kong dollar loan at a fixed rate of interest, the first occasion that a Hong Kong dollar loan has been so guaranteed.
Financially the position is also good. I reported last year that the total value of all the civil,
electrical and mechanical engineering contracts
had been placed at prices within the sum
estimated by the Provisional Authority, the fore- runner of the Corporation, as being the initial cost

本人必須強調,在香港此種多變土壤條 件下進行土木工程,遇到此類困難實在是正 常現象。工程迄今遇到的阻延甚少,本公司 實屬幸運。
因此,總括而言,一九七七年乃土木工 程施工進展良佳之一年,有關之所有主要承 建商均繼續顯出其克服困難之能力,應付此 類大規模而複雜工程所引起之典型問題。
英國、德國、日本及美國等地履行之一 切電機及機械合約,均非常順利且按工程進 度進行。以英國而言,首兩節車卡已在英國 北部Tyne & Wear試驗車軌上順利完成廠方 試車工作,另四節車卡在伯明翰之都城嘉慕 廠內製造中,現已接近完成。首批兩節車卡 定於一九七八年五月一日運抵本港,隨後每 星期陸續運到兩節。此等車卡將置放於九龍 灣車廠內現正鋪設之車軌上,試車工作亦將 隨之開始。第一批自動收車費機已於一九七 八年一月開始在美國聖地雅哥接受廠方試驗 ,此一重要合約亦正順利履行。各國電機及 機械工程合約承建商之表現,証明本公司對 合約批出之抉擇實屬正確。根據初步印象, 各項產品之品質,均令人非常滿意。
自年底以來,本公司運用一九七六年所 得之購買選擇權,向都城嘉慕公司添購七十 節車卡,使一九八一年時在「修正早期系統」 上行駛之列車,車廂由四卡增至六卡。值得 指出者,乃承建商已同意將添購車卡之價格 由有價格變動條款之英鎊價格轉為固定港元 價格,英國出口信貸担保部亦同意保証一項
