I am grateful for this interview as it enables me to say "thank you" for the great personal interest you have shown throughout the complicated negotiations which have resulted in the contract for this new power station.
The assistance rendered by the Department of Industry in coordinating the many facets of the project and in bringing together the various parties involved has been invaluable.
This augers well for future contracts on similar lines such as :-
(i) An order for an EHV transmission line system, the estimated value being approximately £100M.
(ii)
The possible electrification and modernisation of the Kowloon/Canton railway system.
(iii) The provision to China of mining machinery and
technical "know how" also
The supply of off-shore oil rigs, drilling equipment and associated expertise.
The success of Project 77 is that it can be shown to be of benefit :-
(a)
(b)
(c)
To the U.K. in that it has guaranteed employment to some 2,000 persons over the next four years.
It is anticipated we will be able to purchase the greater part of our coal requirements from China thus providing that country with much needed foreign exchange,
It emphasises the value of Hong Kong to all parties.
