VISIT OF THE RIGHT HONOURABLE ALAN WILLIAMS MP TO HONG KONG
1. Mr Alan Williams, Minister of State at the Department of Industry, is planning to visit Hong Kong on 7/8 April on his way back from Japan. Mr Williams' Private Secretary has written to 10 Downing Street asking for the Prime Minister's consent to the stop-over. His letter, which has already been answered, was copied to the Private Secretary.
2. The objective of Mr Williams' visit is to pay a courtesy call on Sir Lawrence Kadoorie, Chairman of the China Light and Power Company. However, as the Department of Industry now know, Sir Lawrence Kadoorie will not be in the Colony on 7/8 April but Mr Williams still wishes to call at Hong Kong for a day's rest after a hard week in Tokyo. The Hong Kong Government are willing to arrange Mr Williams' stay in the Colony.
3. Sir Lawrence Kadoorie will be in London during the week beginning 9 April and, at present, only has engagements on 10 and 11 April. There should, therefore, be an opportunity for Mr Williams to call on Sir Lawrence Kadoorie later in that week.
4. I recommend that the Private Secretary write to Mr Mills (Private Secretary to Mr Williams). The letter should reiterate that Sir Lawrence Kadoorie will not be in Hong Kong on 7/8 April and should suggest that Mr Williams could arrange to meet Sir Lawrence during the latter's stay in England.
5.
I submit a draft.
