Ambassador in Japan.

II.E. the Governor gave a key address (Appendix II)

to the Keidanren on 21 November 1978 in which the present

and prospective economic relations between Japan and Hong

Kong were highlighted.

Suggestions received by the Mission

Many suggestions were received by the Mission

for improvement in the economic relations between Japan

and Hong Kong, in particular to promote imports into Japan

from Hong Kong. Notable among these were:

(i) to increase the use of Japanese agents for pro-

motion of long kong products and utilise office

display space in the "Sunshine Building"

specially built for display of foreign origin

products;

(ii) to create a Hong Kong symbol of quality similar

to the JIS symbol used in Japan;

(iii) to promote exports to Japan of machine components

and parts which were being imported in increasing

quantities;

(iv) to promote the quality image and exports of high

quality products to Japan and reduce complaints;

(v) to participate in meetings of a committee to be

established by the Japan Foreign Trade Council

to study means to encourage imports from Hong

Kong;

(vi) to attend industrial investment seminars to be

organised by JETRO;
