5. The Mission, including as it did, Sir Y K Pao as well as the Chairmen of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank and Jardine Matheson, carried considerable clout. But I think it was well led by Sir Y K Kan and achieved as much as could reasonable be expected. We will now push hard at this door which has slightly given in response to the Mission's pressure.
6. It was ironic that nearly all the Ministers who received us so cordially were out of office within a week or our return. However the exception was Sonoda, the Foreign Minister, and since he was the moving spirit behind what was done for us there is a reasonable hope of continuity and political support.
7. I am sending copies of this letter to Michael Wilford in Tokyo, Burgess in Brussels, Tsao in Geneva and Crowson in Washington.
