The Chairman pointed out that some of the UK wishes were causing worry and that although the figures for Category 6 (trousers) were serious, imports for other products had not really increased much compared to 1976 or 1977.

The Commission was of the opinion that the idea of a modus vivendi with

Malta including target figures for sensitive products like trousers and others for Maltese exports would be a feasable operation.

Korea

A Commission delegation was to make a visit to Seoul on an invitation from

the Korean authorities. No precise problem would be dealt with there.

Questions of origin of certain products where some doubts prevailed would

be discussed on the margin of this meeting with the Koreans.

El Salvador

The UK delegation had asked for an exit from the basket for one category

of products: coton yarn. The Commission had sent a lote Verbale to the Mission of.

El Salvador requesting contacts to discuss this problem of exports to the UK.

Mention of levels were carefully avoided in this Note; since there was no

agreement with El Salvador, the Community had to respect H.F.A. rules.,

In reply to the German delegation, the Chairman said that the Commission

had still no precise offer in mind.

The Dutch delegation suggested that a solution be found similar to the

arrangements with Guatemala and Haiti. The UK delegation welcomed the steps taken by the Commission and pressed for attempts to be made to stop exports according to Article 6 of agreements with other countries, since exports

had risen well above the exit from the basket level. The Chairman pointed

out that this question would be discussed in the 113 Committee the following

dey.
