Licences and Statistica
The Commission representative said that some improvements had been made in
speeding up the communication of statistics from Member States to the Commission
and acked the delegations of the Member States where there were still delays
in doing the necessary to rectify the situation. They insisted on the importance
of this system of statistics of actual imports for questions of exit from the
basket. The German delegation explained why delays occured.
The French delegation asked the Commission to send a detailed letter on the
notification of statistics to their Permanent representations so that the
persons concerned with statistics could be informed and delays be shortened.
Current and Pending consultations
Bangladesh
The Commission representative announced and commented upon the initialling of
the agreement with Bangladesh.
Malta
The UK asked the Commission to contact the Maltese authorities because they had problems with imports of some products. Informal contacte had taken place the
previous day during which the Commission had explained the present situation
to the Maltese delegation. The Maltese delegation had expressed surprise that
the Community had difficulties with Maltese exports and asked for figures of
the total imports into the Community. During the discussions special attention
was given to Category 6 (trousers), a sensitive product in the UK, cotton yarn,
T-shirts and shirts, imports of which had considerably increased. This met
with a lively reaction from the Maltese delegation who said their exports were
more directed to the German market than to the UK. The Maltese delegation
wanted to pursue the matter on a practical level and take steps in London as
well. They agreed moreover, with some reservation, to have an initial exchange
of statistical figures and to meet a second time to review the situation on the
basis of extra information which would then be available.
