2 Approximately 70 tons of Iremite/Iregex cartridged explosives

have been supplied and used in Hong Kong during the past three years. About half of this quantity was in the 21" size for quarrying applications, and the other half in 1" diameter, for general purpose use in small scale excavation blasting, trenching, site formation, tunnelling etc. Further evidence of the suitability of slurry explosives based on the aluminium sensitised gelled nitrate concept, is the fact that over the period February 1973/December 1978,

a total of more than 7,000,000 lbs of Iregel slurries have been supplied to the High Island Dam contract and the general quarrying trade in Hong Kong from a production unit comprising a mix-pump truck and support base installation operating from the High Island

site, The installation has regularly supplied a demand for

explosives in blast holes of 3" and upwards in diameter, free from

misfires or accidents.

t

3 ICI in its closely integrated explosives group operations manufactured

and sold 81.3 million lbs of "cap sensitive" slurry explosives worldwide in 1977. Whilst certain large diameter slurry explosives can be cap sensitive, "cap sensitive" in this context may be taken as equating with small diameter. This excludes compositions incorporating conventional explosive sensitisers such as nitroglycerine, TNT and PETN, but covers a range of slurry explosive formulations in which those essentially similar to Iremite/Iregex figured largely. Access to the various technologies as used by members of the ICI explosives group is available as required for the Hong Kong plant. Small diameter packaged slurries manufactured by ICI covered the full range of

applications in mining and construction work.
