installations are to be designed to:

Minimise the disruptive effect that assisted maintenance periods, dockings and refitting processes may have upon complex systems. b. Facilitate the application of 'upkeep by exchange' policy.

Keep the time to undertake Harbour and Sea Trials to a minimum taking into account the provision of any additional on-board overall performance measuring equipment and any outside facilities that may

further this aim.

d. Have routes designated to allow easy removal and replacement of equipment, without use of non-uniformed manpower wherever practicable,

and with minimum disruption to normal ship life.

Have Maintenance envelopes around all equipments.

Provide arrangements for the connection of alternative services (electrical power, chilled water, etc) for all equipments and systems subject to 'Keep Alive' procedures when the primary ships services are dismantled for examination, repair or replacement. 'Keep Alive' is a condition which entails the maintenance of the integrity of the equip- ment/system, its supporting services and its immediate environment, so that it may be operated as required to carry out all routine maintenance and performance tests, and so permit the location and rectification of defects as and when they arise especially during non- operational periods in order to avoid protracted setting to work and

tuning periods.

Provide for the maximum economy in effort in carrying out the Ship Husbandry task efficiently, following the instructions and the recommendations contained in 'Ship Husbandry Design Code of Practice

(DG Ships Publication No 381).
