As shown in Annex A, these cover:

Sectors.

a. West Sector. A small sector, close to Canton, where a considerable number of CCN craft are based. It is separated from the South Sector by Lantau Island. The normal entry is via the small channel between Tsing Yi and Na Wan. In Deep Bay, Naval support for the Marine Police is limited by shallow water, with consequent restrictions on craft manoeuvrability. Additionally, extensive oyster cultivation in this area leads to political

difficulties.

b. South Sector. The western part, around the Soko Islands, is a possible entry point for Communist craft into Hong Kong waters. narrow stretch of water and easy to cover. However, the southern edge of South Sector is open water. It is 36 miles long and close to several Communist Chinese Islands from which Communist craft could be operated.

It is also the Western Approach for Merchant traffic to Hong Kong.

C.

East Sector. The East Sector is large and bounded on two sides by Communist Chinese territorial waters from which Communist craft could

infiltrate. It also contains many islands and inlets. These are either

sparsely populated or uninhabited and could afford cover for Communist craft.

Sea conditions in East Sector are generally worse than in the other sectors

and frequently deteriorate to Sea State 4 and occasionally to Sea State 6.

North Sector. This is another large sector with many islands and inlets.

It is bounded on two sides by the Communist Chinese mainland. Consequently,

sea conditions are rarely bad except, occasionally, in the south of the area.

On the eastern side of the sector is the Communist patrol craft base, Nan O

This usually contains one or two small lightly armed craft which occasionally

make passage around the northern part of Mirs Bay to Sha Tau Kok.

remote Island of Ping Chau is situated just over a mile from this base.
