an 'adequate contribution to NATO (but not in the Mediterranean).
Forces Stationed Outside the NATO Area
6. The Guidelines recognised a continuing need to
defence of the
station or to deploy forces outside the NATO Area stemming
from responsibility for dependent territories,
Caribbean Associated States, support for United Nations operations
and undertakings with friendly governments. However no stock-piles of
War reserves are maintained to support forces so stationed or
deployed. Significant forces are stationed in Hong Kong, Brunei
(until 1983), Cyprus, Malta (until 1979), Gibraltar and Belize.
After withdrawal from Malte these forces will total 10 7. battalions,
4 larrier fighter ground attesk aircraft, 187 helicopters, 2
frigates, five patrol craft and an ice patrol ship. Up to 6. further battalions are in haulk at any one time training or on pre-cr post-
deployment leave associated with this contiming commitment.
To support these "standing" commitments, 7 of the 11 VC 10 aircraft
and 12 of the 50 Hercules aircraft of Air Support Command are
permanently employed ou routine trooping and freighting asks.
Additionally, small detachments (under 70 servicemen in total)
are stationed in Malaysia, Diego Garcia and the Falkland Islands.
(Our involvement in the Sultan's war in the Oman has reduced to
the point where our commitment is met entirely by Loan Service
