Speculative press reports concerning this incident have presented an assortment of opinions and theorics regarding SHIH's motives and some of the most significant ones are:-

a New Evening Post article dated the 10th March which reports on the Peoples Liberation Army broadcast appeal but emphasises that the Chinese authorities do not condone international hijacking and aim only to attract 'military* aircraft and vessels. A translation is attached at Annexure 'C';
the Kung Sheung Daily News on 11th March quoting 'exclusive reliable sources' reporting Taiwan's Security Authority's investigation of the possibility that SHIH was induced to defect as a result of previous contacts with Chinese communist agents while under training in Singapore in 1974; and
(c) many papers, on the 13th March, reported a rumour
circulating in Taiwan that SHIH's motives were prompted by his personal conflict with his other China Airlines colleagues.
All crew members have now returned to Taiwan, but before leaving they signed an undertaking to return to Hong Kong if further enquiries were necessary. The China Airlines authorities have been asked to provide background material relevant to the character of the deceased and police investigations are continuing.
