You will have seen from our telegrams that there was an incident involving a China Airlines aircraft from Taiwan on 9 March, It is still not clear whether or not there was a genuine attempt to hijack the aircraft.
2.
I thought it would be a good idea, on general grounds and in case similar episodes occur in future, if I gave details of the incidert as seen us o the NCNA. so today and attach a copy of the record of that conversation. 1 accordingly did
3.
In addition you with interested to have for your own records a copy of the rat for strange document found in the pocket of Shih, the light Support Engineer, who was killed during the incicon
attaca a cy, together with notes prepared by Special Branch, to show what certain parts of it mean. There can be no doubt that Shih had noted down some of the instructions given by Peking Radio un flying (military) aircraft to China.
4.
I am also attaching a copy of an article on the incident which appeared in the communist-controlled sin Wan Pao (New Evening Post) on 10 March, You will se that the anticle says that Peking coes not approve of international hijacking incidents and has not called for cavil aircraft to defect. Paradoxically, however, the article goes on to say that any aircraft or person defecting will be welcome. 7 think the explanation must be that, while the Chinese indeed do not approve of hijacking, they cost hardy say that they would reject an aircraft coming from their own estranged province of Taiwan.
