Two-way Trade. Virtually the whole range of items the Chinese are now exporting

are sent to Hong Kong: Table IV shows the principal commodities in the trade. Food-

stuffs have remained the main constituent of Chinese exports although as a proportion

of China's total exports to Hong Kong they have fallen in 10 years from just over 50%

to just over 40% as Chinese exports have become more diversified. New products such

as frozen food (eg meat), petroleum products (from 1972 onwards) and textile fibres

have become more important. As the general export of Chinese light industrial goods

(eg lathes) has developed so these commodities have appeared in China's exports to

Hong Kong but as yet they comprise only a fractional proportion of total exports.
